Mona Kirtley Swanks, 97, formerly of Owensboro, KY, recently of Ten Mile, TN died Saturday, June 16th, 2012 at Athens Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Ten Mile United Methodist Church. A retired school teacher and member of Meigs Co. Retired Teachers Association. She was an active member of the Order of DeMolay Mothers Organization and past Mother of the Year. A member of Oak Ridge Eastern Star Chapter #390 and the Grand Order. Member of Past Matrons and Patrons of Eastern Star - Knoxville. Member of Extension Homemakers of TN and received National Honor Award. Past state officer and District Vice President of Public Policy for East District F.C.E. She was preceded in death by her parents W.C. Kirtley and Ida A. Kirtley, her husband John Oliver Swanks, grandson Alex Bales and a sister-in-law Fairy Swanks. Survivors include her sons Jerry H. Swanks, and W. Tom Swanks and wife Kym Swanks, grandchildren Jonathan Swanks and Tabitha Bales and Kevin Swanks and wife Amy Swanks, great grandchildren Lillian Swanks, Veronica Mattox and Ashley Mattox, and nieces Nancy Swanks and Mary Stearns and nephew Robert Swanks and special friend Sammie Smith Swanks. Funeral services will be at 8pm, Wednesday in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Brown officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Owensboro, KY Saturday at 10am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ten Mile United Methodist Church or the Meigs Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund.
