BOWERS FUNERAL HOME Decatur Chapel P. O. Box 389 Decatur, TN 37322 423-334-3661 FAX 423-334-1523 Lizie Jean Couey, 84, of Decatur, went home to be with the Lord Friday, Nov. 13, 2015 at her home. Born next to the oldest of 15 children into a farm family, she learned about hard work and care-giving at an early age. Besides caring for her family and working on the family farm, she worked for many area farmers, cleaned house for various local families and was a devoted care giver to several people over the years, including her mother. She also did custodial work for 2 local factories and 1 elementary school. Finding much enjoyment in canning and preserving foods and being an avid gardener, quilter and crafter. She was very active in both the Regional and Meigs Co. fairs and had won many ribbons and awards. She also enjoyed helping people in need, caring for her cattle and displaying her numerous collections. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Cecil Howard; husband, Paul Couey; son, Randall Couey; granddaughter, Amy Roxanna Lewis; son-in-law, Boyd "Whistle" Guffey; 4 sisters, Willie Womack, Tip Long, Rose Scroggins and Edna Shaver; 2 brothers, Junior Howard and Ronnie Howard.. Survivors include 4 daughters and 3 son-in-laws, Charlene (Dave) Withrow, Joan (Marvin) Lewis, Brenda Guffey, Tammy (Leslie) Jones, all of Decatur; 7 brothers, Bud Howard, of Georgetown, Bo Howard, of Chattanooga, Ira Howard, of Decatur, Boss Howard, of Cleveland, Jessie Ray Howard, of Birchwood, Donnie Howard, of Cleveland, Pete Howard, of Decatur; sister, Christine Thompson, of Georgetown; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of good friends. The funeral service will be 11 am Tuesday in the Bowers Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry Johnson officiating. Interment will be at Beta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Matt Withrow, Barry Guffey, Stacey Guffey, Rodney Long, Bryan Burchfield and Heath Cable. Honorary pallbearers are Micah and Marshall Brantley. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you bring a blanket or can food items to be given to local families in need this holiday season.
