Lawrence Bennett “Ben” Varnell, age 85, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, surrounded by his family at his farm in Decatur, TN.
He was a lifelong resident of Decatur, TN, where he touched many lives through his selfless love and generosity to others. His dedication to his faith and family will leave an unforgotten legacy.
He served his country in the United States Navy from 1956-1960 as a Radar Operator. He served on two Naval Aircraft Carriers, the USS Boxer and the USS Kearsarge. After returning home from service, he joined his father’s home building business and took over the business after his father’s passing. He then continued building homes in the Decatur and surrounding areas for more than 25 years. He retired from the United States Postal Service in Decatur after 30 years of service.
He was a lifelong member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur, TN, where he was chairman of deacons.
He was a pilot and had his own plane for many years. He also was a licensed to teach flying and taught for many years. He loved to golf, hunt, water ski, camp, and spent many summers with his family creating lasting memories.
His greatest joy came from being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His love for family will be irreplaceable and he will be forever in our hearts until we meet again.
He is preceded in death: parents: Reverend Lawrence Everette and Alma Johnson Varnell; sisters: Elma Jane Childs, Joyce Reno and Linda Varnell; infant son: Steven Everette Varnell; grandsons: Steven Cody Newman, Ryan Bradley; great-granddaughter: Karson McClellan.
He is survived by his Devoted wife of 63 years: Ivadell Heck Varnell; sister: Shirley (Wally) Cunningham of Decatur; Daughters: Robin Varnell of Decatur, Janet (Rodney) Bradley of Tellico, Shelia (David) Mann of Knoxville; Grandchildren: Jessica (Kevin) Ervin, Lauren (Stefan) McClellen, Tara (Dallas) Givens, Haley (Derick) Brown, English Mann, Benjamin Mann; Great-Grandchildren: Isaac Parker, Lily Hurst, Reece and Ramsey Ervin, Cohen McClellen, Shelby Givens; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Hospice of Chattanooga and his caregivers.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023 in the Chapel of Decatur Funeral Home & Cremation Services with the Rev. Joseph Reed.
Interment will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 27, 2023 in Decatur Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 - 7p.m., prior to the service.
