Herman Cleo Thompson, age 89, of Decatur, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Life Care Center of Athens.
He was a very active member of Bethsadia Baptist Church where he worked on numerous church projects, served as Song Leader, and served as an ordained Deacon since 1956. He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He worked for Hiwassee Land Company for 35 years as an Equipment Foreman. After his retirement he was employed by Bowers Funeral Home for 22 years and was a longtime member of the Meigs Co. Rescue Squad. Herman was a talented handyman who enjoyed helping others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; J.C. and Mary Denton Thompson, brothers Allen Lee Thompson and Paul Donald Thompson, and an infant brother.
Survivors include his very loving wife of 69 years, Mary Ruth Rockholt Thompson, and one sister Velma Thompson Roberts Campbell. Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Nephews and Great-Great Nieces and Nephews also survive.
Funeral Service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, July 7, 2017 in the Chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Sorrah officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethsadia Baptist Cemetery. Wayne Brown, J.C. Crabtree, Chris McKenzie, Billy Moon, Raymond Moon, and David Roberts will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Bowers, Charlie Dannel, and Russell Roberts.
The family will receive friends on Friday, from 2 until 4, at Bowers Funeral Home prior to the services.
