February 16, 1937 — October 11, 2023

Dorotha Elberta Broadway, 86, of Ten Mile, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.

Elberta was born to the late Elbert Monroe Trew and Edna Mae Enix, in Ten Mile, Tennessee on February 16, 1937. Elberta’s mother, being a widow, remarried in 1942 to William Sam Edgemon, and the family moved to Indiana. Elberta graduated from Sweetser High School in 1954. After graduation, the family left Indiana and moved back to Ten Mile to start a marina on the Trew family farm on Watts Bar Lake called Sam’s Boat Dock. Not long after, Elberta went to work at Dupont Nylon Plant in Chattanooga, where she met the love of her life, Ross Broadway. They were married on August 17, 1956. In 1959, Elberta and Ross made their home in Ten Mile to help run Sam’s Boat Dock, where Elberta and Ross created countless memories for family and friends for multiple generations.

Elberta was an avid sewer, knitter and quilter. She and her mother hand made quilts, dolls, and clothing for family, friends, and neighbors. For several years she would knit and crochet caps for cancer patients undergoing radiation through “Hats from the Heart” at the Mary Ellen Locher Center in Chattanooga.

In 1990, Elberta assumed the role of chairperson of the Hobby Department of the Meigs County Fair. Under her leadership, the department received the Superior Award of recognition for several years. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Meigs County fair and also as a volunteer for over 30 years.

Elberta, along with her husband were volunteers for the American Chestnut Foundation. Volunteers planted and re-established the American Chestnut Trees which have been stricken with blight.

For over 40 years, Elberta was part of the Family Community Education Club (FCE), which is designed to strengthen families and enhance the community with educational programs and activities.

She was a big supporter of the American Cancer Society (ACS). In 2008, she was recognized by ACS for the Volunteerism Leadership Award for her many years of service to ACS and the Meigs County Relay for Life.

In 2012, Elberta was selected as 1 of 300 volunteers in the state of Tennessee to receive the Governor’s Volunteer Star. This honor was chosen by fellow county residents and county mayor for her innovative approach and generous commitment to improving our community.

She loved photography, hiking, camping, and travelling.
