Doris Ann Layman, 79, of Decatur, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Starr Regional Medical Center of Athens, after a brief illness. A native and lifelong resident of Meigs County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ruth Dennis. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Bob Dennis; and sister, Linda Graham. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harold Layman, of Decatur; daughters Kym Swanks and her husband Tom, of Ten Mile, Jerri Layman, of Seattle, WA., Ruth Shipp and her husband Paul, of Knoxville; grandchildren Jessica Shipp, Paul Gavin Shipp and his fiancee Michelle Fox, and Ann Marie Shipp; brother-in-law, Doug Graham; sister-in-law Pat Dennis; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin and friend, Nadine Jarvis. Doris farmed and gave her time for many years to help with causes like the Meigs County fair, Meigs Soil Conservation District, voter registration, and anything her children were doing, like 4-H, FFA, and band. She was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church and currently attended Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at Bowers Funeral Home in Decatur on Saturday Nov. 8, from 11 am to 2 pm. The funeral service will be on Saturday at 2 pm at the funeral home with the Rev. Hugh Bryan and Rev. Andrew Lay officiating. Interment will be in Mtn. View Memorial Gardens Saturday after the funeral. Pallbearers will be Tom Swanks, Paul Shipp, Paul Gavin Shipp, Mike McKenzie, Carlos Crisp and Bobby Roberts. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Mt. Olivet Methodist Church, c/o Helen Blevens at Southeast Bank, treasurer, in memory of Doris.
