Carl Richard Mason, age 92, born in Sweetwater, TN, resident of Meigs County for over 80 years, passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
He was a son of the late Claude and Ethel Crowder Mason. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Decatur, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 175, Chattanooga, TN, a 1949 graduate of Meigs County High School, Tennessee Wesleyan College, and attended East Tennessee State, where he played football his freshman year. Carl served as Chairman of the Meigs County Board of Education for 20 years, was a National Director of Dixie Youth Baseball for several years, and a lay minister for 30 years primarily at local nursing homes and jails. He retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory after more than 39 years of service. He enjoyed collecting Indian relics and coaching baseball, hunting, and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Mary Lucille Davis Mason; son: James Richard Mason; grandson: James Adam Mason; brother: Billy C. Mason.
Survivors include his son: Dr. Larry D. (Vicki) Mason; daughters: Connie (Jeff) Landrum, Carla (Lynn) Ottinger, all of Decatur; sister: Betty Thompson of Huntsville, AL; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; several nieces, a nephew, and other extended family.
A private graveside service was held in the Decatur Cemetery on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 with the Reverend Stacey Gennoe officiating.
