Betty Jean Hicks Hickman

Betty Jean Hicks Hickman, age 91, of Decatur passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at the Hospice of Chattanooga Care Center.

She was born in McMinn County, Tn on August 6, 1931 to the late Harry and Violet Neotia Watson Hicks. Betty grew up in the Hillsview Community where she attended the Hillsview School and later graduated from Calhoun High School.

Betty was an excellent seamstress and sewed many beautiful clothes. She had been employed by American Uniform, Cleveland Chair, Simco Leather, and Duckhead. She was very independent and could do anything from changing a tire or battery to repairing her lawn mower but in recent years had lost her sight due to macular degeneration and glaucoma and impaired mobility had limited her physically, but her spirit of independence remained. In later years Betty enjoyed listening to books and magazines and enjoyed her cats, especially Jackson, whom she missed terribly.

Betty is survived by her daughter: Bobbie Hickman (Charles Pollard) of Littleton, CO, a brother: Billie Hicks (Laura), a niece: Cheryl Haywood, a nephew: Dennis Hicks all off Athens, other extended family, and a host of friends.

The family would like to say thank you to Betty’s caregivers: Jennifer Johnson Moon, Kimberly Gosset, and Sharon Stephens, as well as to Larry Crisp(NP) and the Staff of the Restoration Clinic of Decatur for their compassion and care of Betty.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023 in the chapel of Decatur Funeral Home & Cremation Services with the Rev. Jimmy Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Short Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2:00 on Saturday prior to the service.
